The Self Portrait

Yes, weekly art class at the Winnipeg Art Gallery Studio have been stretching me into colourful new directions! My instructor, Racheal Tycoles has been suggesting that I get out of my realism “rut” and try some different things. On my painting page, you will see “WHY” and “Like Rain” which were created in a one weekend burst of self-expressive energy.

This portrait of myself was an exercise in portraits – but with a twist. Racheal showed us self portraits of other artists that ranged from a likeness to colourful balloons, and challenged us to paint ourselves in a different light, without using a mirror or photo. Upon viewing the result of that evening, I wondered if I really see myself as a younger woman who wears too much makeup and has wild hair. Hmmm.

The second half of the assignment (next class) was to paint a fellow classmate. I used a serving plate as my canvas, and painted Gary, who happens to be a chef, right on the plate. His likeness peers out from a slice of pizza.  Now THAT’S different!

I sure look forward to my weekly class!

the color I see on the outside symbolizes the Faye I know on the inside … no fear of expression of what lies underneath … an example of love and thankfulness
