Two Paintings in acrylic.
This painting duo is named in honor of the late Gerald Folkerts, a well known and respected Winnipeg artist who died at the age of 51 in 2009.
Gerald’s series, Head Over Heels was described as follows:
“Gerald’s work, ‘Head Over Heels’ explores the lives of those whom we most often tend to ignore, or at least, overlook – the homeless, the poor, the sick, the young, the aged. Much is revealed about the journey and the roads traveled through these portraits of feet and faces. The stories seem worth telling.” ( www.folkerts.ca)
Steve and Nanci Bell traveled to Bangladesh with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank in 2008. Faye Hall has painted many of the faces of people that Steve photographed on his journey, but this particular set of two paintings are from photos taken by his wife Nanci.
Nanci had always wanted to have these two photos painted by Gerald Folkerts, but it was not to be. In 2011 Steve commissioned Faye to paint the portrait duo as a gift for his wife.
Nanci and Steve’s group had been in Bangladesh traveling from one project to another. The mud hut villages had no modern facilities, so they usually stopped at a local restaurant to use the washroom. At this particular stop, there were some children there on the sidewalk, with their mother close by.
Nanci said, “They were so friendly and nice – and I loved the ingenuity of the leaf and apple car held together by a little twig. Amazing ingenuity. But look at that proud little face. So shy and smart all at once. He was great. We were there 5 minutes then on our way in the van again.”
